A Constant Irritant to a Normal Mind
Installation at Cob Gallery, Camden. Part of “The Yellow Wallpaper”, a group show based on the story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. With Eve Ackroyd, Becky Allen, Gabriella Boyd, Adeline de Monseignat, and Suzannah Pettigrew, curated by Natasha Hoare and Roxie Warder.
The piece took as its starting point the shifts between inner and outer worlds experienced by the narrator of Gilman’s text. Her inner state of mind seeps into her surroundings until what is ‘subjective’ and what ‘objective’ can no longer be distinguished. Thus as the shapes swirl outwards, baroque-like, from an enigmatic, dense interior, bearing images redolent of confinement, so the images they carry become externalised. The textured concrete of the outer shapes refers to the concrete floor of the exhibition space- the whole rising out of the latter as if the fabric of one’s surroundings is alive.
